The Act of March 3, 1849 authorized the production of Double Eagles or Twenty Dollar Gold Coins to be minted from California Gold Rush bullion. In 1849 the first $20 "Double Eagle" Liberty Head coins were minted and by 1850 they were introduced into circulation. James Longacre, the U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, designed the $20 coins. The $20 Liberty Head coin was termed the "Double Eagle" as a result of the $10 Eagle coin. Since the $20 Liberty Head was twice the value of the $10 Eagle, it became known as the "Double Eagle". The infamous motto, "In God We Trust" was added to the coins in 1866. In 1877, the design was altered from "Twenty D" to "Twenty Dollars".
