Steven Contursi to Receive 2007 Exemplary Service Award
Steven L. Contursi is the recipient of the 2007 American Numismatic Association Exemplary
Service Award.
He will receive the award Aug. 10 during the ANA Membership Award
Presentations at the World’s Fair of Money® in Milwaukee, Wis.
As President of Rare Coin Wholesalers in Dana Point, Calif., Contursi has repeatedly
demonstrated his love of numismatics and fervent support of the ANA.
He proposed and funded a recruitment program that provides the second year of dues
free for new ANA members – a project that has added hundreds of new collectors to
the membership roll.
When the recruitment project was launched in May 2006, Contursi proudly claimed, “I
believe in the ANA, and every collector should, too.”
Contursi is an ardent supporter of the planned ANA museum campuses in San Francisco
and in Washington, D.C.
He recently displayed his leadership by making the largest financial pledge in the
ANA’s history – $1 million – in support of this ambitious project.
He has also sponsored the exhibit area at recent National Money Show and World’s Fair
of Money conventions, and was a title sponsor of the 2006 ANA Denver convention.
An early member of the 1891 Alliance, he has helped the Association obtain positive,
nationwide publicity and attract visitors to the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum and
annual conventions by loaning to the ANA and underwriting the exhibitions of the
Neil/Carter/Contursi 1794 Dollar and the unique hallmark-on-eagle’s-breast 1787 Brasher
Doubloon.
He actively advances numismatic knowledge by frequently providing coins for
promotion and education across the country.
The ANA Exemplary Service Award recognizes an individual or entity (club, corporation, firm
or association) that has performed services on behalf of the ANA that are "above and
beyond" the call.
Past recipients include Eric Newman (1993), the California State
Numismatic Society (1998), the Chicago Coin Club (1999) and Q. David Bowers (2003).
The American Numismatic Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating
and encouraging people to study and collect money and related items.
With nearly 32,000 members, the Association serves the academic community, collectors
and the general public with an interest in numismatics.
The ANA helps all people discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of
programs including its education and outreach, museum, library, publications, conventions
and seminars.
